Our eyes allow us to see the world, but they never see themselves directly. It is only with the aid of other tools—through a layer of abstraction—that our eyes can view their own likeness: a mirror, a photograph, a reflection. This is the paradox of human sight: eyes to see and to be seen, but designed to never see oneself.
